Spot Brand Spot Rocker SS LG
The Spot Rocker SS 29 isn’t particularly new, but this admittedly gorgeous matte Estoril blue bike melds everything that’s pure about singlespeed 29ers with everything that’s exciting about modern mountain bike design. You get a Reynolds 853 steel frame with neat welds, but you also get a 67.7-degree head tube angle and componentry goodies like a Fox 34 Float Performance 100mm fork and a Fox Transfer dropper post. You also earn incredulous expressions from full suspension–bound mountain bikers at the trailhead, which just adds to the experience. Power transfer through the Gates belt drive is immediate; it’s easy to wheelie the bike if you’re not careful with the low-end torque from the (converted) 32-20 gear ratio. When you combine these traits with a dropper post, you get a bike that convinces you to do more than you’d otherwise try on a singlespeed. Ascending, you pick a line, stand on the pedals, and patiently roll over everything in your path. Descending, the bike gains speed fast and therefore demands fast decision-making of the rider: Pick the right line and make the jump to Hyperspace, or screw up and roll over the boulder, trusting your meat to the slack head angle and your ass-over-wheel riding position. Both ways amuse you, and that’s what the Spot Rocker SS 29 aims to do. Let’s Talk Belt Drives The Gates CenterTrack belt is bright red; it’s meant to draw your attention. “That’s really the soul of it,” says Spot Brand President Andrew Lumpkin, who says the Rocker SS 29 would be less direct, louder, and heavier with a chain drive. “The feel through the pedals isn’t like a belt,” he says. “That smooth, magic feeling.” The system rides as smooth as promised. The Rocker has been belt-driven for 9 years, and although Gates’s CenterTrack systems are gaining popularity in urban and fat bikes, the Rocker is still a rare mountain bike developed and refined around the belt. The 42-26t gearing (a 1.615 ratio) effectively converts to a 32/20 (1.600) gear ratio on a chain drive. It’s designed to be an entry point: You’ll quickly reach the top end on downhills, but there’s enough torque to make it a capable climber on all but the steepest and rockiest of ascents. If you’re worried about clipping the belt, mount a bash guard on the Rocker’s ICG tabs. Should you decide that you hate singlespeeding, ditch the belt and revert to gears. Spot’s Kobe 2 Slider Dropouts work with belts and geared (or singlespeed) chain drivetrains; just mount your preferred derailleur on a $25 hanger from Spot. In the belt-driven layout, you can buy longer Gates belts to lengthen the chainstay or accommodate a different ratio with Gates sprockets; both are also available from Spot. A Proficient Specification The belt may be the Rocker SS 29’s centerpiece, but Spot hasn’t skimped on componentry. There’s a Fox 34 120mm fork and a Fox Transfer dropper post, and a SRAM X5 crank and powerful SRAM Level TL hydraulic brakes with 180- and 160mm front and rear rotors, respectively. The Stan’s NoTubes Arch S1 wheelset weighs less than 2,000 grams and comes set up as tubeless with Schwalbe Nobby Nic 29x2.35mm tires. You can bump the tire width up to 2.8 with 27.5-inch wheels, Lumpkin says, with 6mm of clearance on either side. There’s a 760mm Race Face Aeffect handlebar—plenty for muscling the bike over low-speed barriers—and Vans Slip-On grips, which feel soft and grippy and look dirt-jumper cool. Modern Trail Geometry Compare the current Rocker SS 29 to its predecessors and you’ll see the longer, lower, slacker geometry mantra at work. The Rocker started life at a 71-degree head tube angle; now it’s at 67.7 degrees, with a 73.7-degree seat tube angle. The standover height has been lowered to 713mm (in the size large frame) and the reach is now 442mm. Those figures align it with hardtails like the Trek Stache 9.7 and the Specialized Fuse Comp Carbon 6Fattie/29, although the Rocker maintains a significantly lower standover height. “Enduro rowdiness” is one way Spot describes the Rocker SS 29 on its website, so I asked Lumpkin, the 41-year-old Coloradoan, exactly what that means for a singlespeed 29er. “We have all these rocks here, so my version of rowdy is dodging a lot of obstacles, because that’s how mountain biking used to be,” he says. The latest suspension technologies allow you to straight line everything; kids these days think that’s what rowdy is, Lumpkin says. “What we really mean is: fast.” And fast it is: On the downhill trails where we test enduro bikes, the Rocker SS 29 gained momentum rapidly over smooth sections and maintained speed through rock and boulder fields. With the seatpost dropped and the Fox 34 fork wide open, the Rocker tolerates straight-line descending shenanigans, although it feels best when you pick a smoother line. Kona Process 134 DL 27.5
For those people who prefer a 27.5-wheeled bike, or for those who are a bit shorter in stature, the Process 134 DL 27.5 is like hitting the jackpot. A killer spec featuring a RockShox Pike Select RC Charger DebonAir fork, Deluxe Ultimate rear shock, a SRAM GX/NX drivetrain, and SRAM G2 RS brakes make this bike a premium trail slayer. Kona 6061 Aluminum Kona 7005 and 6061 Aluminum alloys are used extensively throughout our fleet of mountain and asphalt bicycles. Internal Headset Bearing cups are actually pressed into the frame and are easily removable. An internal headset also reduces stack height, so the height of the stem and bars are more adjustable, giving the rider the best fit possible. Tapered Head Tube More girth at the bottom of the head tube better distributes shock force, prolonging the bearing life of the headset itself and eliminating brake shudder, while providing confident steering performance. The inherent strength of its triangular design also means a stronger steering position and improved balance, giving the rider more control in rough terrain. A zero-stack, tapered head tube also puts strength where the load is going—into the lower headset cup—maximizing bearing durability where it’s needed. Kona Wozo
The Wozo takes fat bike stereotypes and tosses them out the window.
